Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, has stressed coordinating efforts for the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) control and economic and social development, and striving to achieve this year's economic and social development goals.
Xi, also Chinese president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks during an inspection tour in east China's Zhejiang Province from Sunday to Wednesday.
Xi acknowledged Zhejiang's efforts in epidemic control and prevention, and said that the efforts at present should be focused on preventing imported cases as other countries are seeing a growing number of confirmed cases.
Xi said that it still needs to stay vigilant against the spread of the infectious disease, and called for strict control and management of asymptomatic patients.
Xi pointed out that crisis and opportunity always coexist. As a result of the continuous spread of the pandemic outside China, the international economic and trade activities have been seriously affected, and China's economic development is facing new challenges. But this also offers new opportunities for China to speed up the development of science and technology, and promote industrial upgrading, Xi said.
He stressed the necessity to strengthen research and analysis of the international economic situation, promptly formulate targeted policies and measures, keep the international supply chain unimpeded, and ensure normal development of all kinds of economic and trade activities.
Xi also stressed the need to improve systems and mechanisms for the prevention and control of major epidemics, improve the public health emergency response system, improve public health facilities and promote a civilized, healthy and green lifestyle among the people.
Xi pointed out that coordinated regional development is closely related to coordinated urban and rural development, stressing the importance of accelerating modernization of agriculture and rural areas.
Intensive efforts should be made to improve agricultural and animal husbandry production so as to ensure a stable price for grain, vegetable and meat supplies and steady income for farmers, he said.
Xi also urged local governments to do a good job in poverty alleviation, and strengthened the importance of environmental protection.
He said that the fight against the epidemic tests the governance level of the Party, for both the leading bodies and individual Party officials in various regions and units.
Party organizations at all levels, especially at the grass-roots level, should always stay sincere in communicating with and serve the people, Xi said, adding that it is needed to carry out a comprehensive review of the formalism and bureaucracy so as to enable Party officials to have more time and energy to do practical work.
