Storyline

Vendors have started selling again at major farmers' markets in Wuhan as the local economy continues to recover after the COVID-19 epidemic was effectively brought under control in the worst-hit central Chinese city.

Local activities have gradually been returning back to normal since the city, which is the provincial capital of Hubei Province, announced the lifting of a 76-day lockdown on April 8, with the re-opening of local markets another indication that daily life is finally getting back on track.

However, a host of stringent epidemic prevention and control measures, including regular disinfections and social distancing, are being strictly enforced at the markets to ensure consistently high safety standards are upheld.

At the Baishazhou Farm Produce Market, one of the city's large-scale markets, the sale of crayfish -- a popular cuisine across Hubei -- is picking up after the outbreak was brought under control.

People can buy all kinds of vegetables, fruits and a range of fresh commodities at the market, though one vendor advised that the sale of live chickens is now prohibited.

Other sellers at the market are pleased to have the opportunity to re-open their stalls and get their businesses back into action after almost four months of closure during the epidemic period.
