"At one level, many of these opinions are laughable, but I'm afraid we do need to take them seriously. In the European Union, there has been a study of some of these theories, this disinformation, and some of them are truly frightening. For example, putting out stories around 'the dangers of a potential vaccine,' that 'somehow the pandemic has been manufactured by the media,' and that 'the virus is not a risk factor for populations.' So, it's very important that we do take these rumors seriously and it's very important that we show that they are false. So, it's a very unfortunate aspect of our media landscape today that rumors act almost like viruses. They spread, they infect, and they cause harm to people and to populations. And we need to be as careful about eradicating rumors as we need to be careful about controlling the virus."

"As the director-general of the World Health Organization has said, we've been fighting two pandemics in recent months: one, a pandemic that has been caused by virus; and two, a pandemic that has been caused by disinformation. And the pandemic of disinformation is in many ways as dangerous as the pandemic caused by the virus. And the story that you mentioned is one of those examples of a conspiracy theory that risks destabilizing our response to this virus. It's very important to understand the origins of this virus and to study those origins scientifically, and not to allow such conspiracy theories to contaminate our thinking, and this theory was one of the worst."

Storyline

Editor-in-chief of The Lancet Richard Charles Horton has warned that eradicating rumors and containing virus are both important as the disinformation may act like spreading viruses.

In a recent video interview with China Central Television (CCTV), Horton, editor-in-chief of world leading medical journal The Lancet, said some of the disinformation about the coronavirus are frightening and causing harm to people.

And we need to be as careful about eradicating rumors as we need to be careful about controlling the virus," said Horton.

On February 20, The Lancet published a statement in support of the scientists, public health professionals, and medical professionals of China combating COVID-19, arguing against the opinion that the virus did not come from nature. Horton told the anchor in the interview that the conspiracy theory of the virus is bad for combating the COVID-19.

It's very important to understand the origins of this virus and to study those origins scientifically, and not to allow such conspiracy theories to contaminate our thinking, and this theory was one of the worst," said Horton.
