Chinese Vice Premier Han Zheng joined political advisors from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and Macao SAR on Saturday in their discussion on state affairs at the ongoing third session of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
After listening carefully to the speeches of CPPCC National Committee members, Han, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said that since the return of Hong Kong and Macao to the motherland, the practice of "one country, two systems" has achieved universally recognized success.
Han said that the central government is firm in its determination and confidence to uphold the principle of "one country, two systems" and has the greatest concerns for the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and Macao and the well-being of compatriots in the two regions.
To establish and improve a legal framework and enforcement mechanism at the national level for safeguarding national security in the HKSAR is a prudent decision made by the central government based on the situation in Hong Kong, Han said.
The Vice Premier pointed out that to punish a small number of people engaged in separating Hong Kong from the motherland and in "black-clad violence" according to law and resolutely oppose external interference is to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the vast majority of Hong Kong residents and safeguard Hong Kong's lasting peace, prosperity and stability.
Han expected the CPPCC National Committee members from Hong Kong and Macao to fulfill their duties and responsibilities, make greater contributions to the successful implementation of "one country, two systems," and keep it on the right track for long-term development and stability.
