Storyline

Police officers fired tear gas and rubber bullets towards protesters who are gathered in front of the White House on Saturday night, as demonstrations sparked by the death of George Floyd continue to escalate.

Floyd, a 46-year-old African American, repeatedly pleaded with a white officer with "I can't breathe" as the latter held him to the ground with a knee to his neck for around 8 minutes on Monday evening in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Floyd lost consciousness and died in custody later.

Saturday marked fifth straight days after the protests erupted across the country.

People have gathered in front of the White House for a consecutive two days.

Police fired pepper spray, tear gas along with rubber bullets at protesters to push them back, with some protesters trying to break the security barricades.

More riot police were deployed after protesters moved to the opposite side of Lafayette Park.

Protesters chanted "hands up, don't shoot" and "I can't breathe" as they demonstrated against police brutality.

Dora King, one of the protesters, said it is high time for the police to reform.

"Horrible, absolutely horrible. Honestly, I think we should reform police. The police've been around for too long, all they do is corruption, it is just corruption, on top of corruption after corruption. They cause more problems than they help," said King.
