U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to cut the relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO) is an act of self-harm which will benefit no one, according to a commentary published by China Media Group on Sunday.
The following is an edited translation of the commentary.
Pulling out from a group that does not suit its taste has become a routine for the United States in recent years. As the world is experiencing the most critical moments of battling the pandemic, the U.S. said it will cut its ties with the WHO and redirect relevant funding unless the organization agrees to make "substantive improvements". Such hegemonic, unilateral, self-harming move is strongly condemned by the international community.
There are only stocks and votes in the eyes of some U.S. politicians. In face with the pandemic, they choose to make threats and unfulfilled promises, and deflect their responsibilities by blaming others. The WHO, which has placed great value on science and never hesitated to speak up, has become another blaming target of the United States.
Some U.S. politicians have placed their own political interests above the greater picture of global anti-pandemic efforts. They are becoming the pretentious black sheep in the international anti-pandemic battlefront. The decision of the U.S. government is going against the general trend, and will drag the country down a path of isolation.
With the world heading in the direction of cooperation, the WHO will not halt its normal operation because of the U.S. withdrawal. Yet the lives of the American people will sure be under a greater threat due to the decisions of the crazy, selfish and short-sighted U.S. politicians. How can these politicians turn a blind eye to this when they keep talking about "human right"?
