"The capsule is equipped with many pressure sensors, through which we can know the distribution of pressure on the capsule during the reentry process. And with the data of pressure distribution, we can get to know the posture of the spacecraft in its reentry and return process. From the data we have retrieved so far, we found that the return posture of the capsule is in line with our expectation, which means our design of its aerodynamic configurations is OK."

Storyline

Return capsule of the trial version of China's new-generation manned spaceship provides abundant information for researchers to carry out follow-up development of the country's new-generation manned spacecraft.

To test the critical technologies of China's new-generation manned spaceship and to accumulate experimental data for future research, the trial spaceship was sent into space by China's new large carrier rocket Long March-5B which made its maiden flight on May 5, while its return capsule successfully came back to the Dongfeng landing site in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region on May 8.

On May 15 the capsule was delivered to Beijing, and since then researchers have been analyzing the abundant data retrieved from its black box.

"We opened the return capsule and retrieved the data from the black box, including the data about the force and heat, as well as the temperature data related to aerodynamic heating, so we can get more data to test our reentry and return technologies and all other critical technologies," said Guo Bin, deputy chief designer of the general assembly of China's new-generation experimental manned spaceship at the Fifth Academy under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.

Preliminary research shows that the experimental spaceship has successfully verified several critical technologies, such as the design of the thermal protection structure and the aerodynamic configurations.

"The capsule is equipped with many pressure sensors, through which we can know the distribution of pressure on the capsule during the reentry process. And with the data of pressure distribution, we can get to know the posture of the spacecraft in its reentry and return process. From the data we have retrieved so far, we found that the return posture of the capsule is in line with our expectation, which means our design of its aerodynamic configurations is OK," said Guo.

Guo added that the researchers will continue to verify the technologies of the return capsule in order to conduct comprehensive test on the safety and re-usability of China's new-generation manned spaceship.

"We will check the sealed cabin to see if it's still leakproof. Then we will charge the return capsule with electricity to see if the facilities can still run normally, so as to provide technological support and accumulate technological data for its reuse in the future," said Guo.
