Storyline

China's new-generation manned submersible which can descend to a depth of 10,000-meters was safely delivered to the coastal city of Fuzhou in east China's Fujian Province after a mammoth 24-hour, 1,000-kilometer journey by road.

Named the "Fendouzhe"(Striver), the submersible set off from its construction base in Wuxi of east China's Jiangsu Province on the evening of June 21.

In order to ensure the success of the transportation, traffic policemen from Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Fujian provinces escorted the convoy.

"We are in charge of the area of Jiaxing. The policemen in front of me will lead the way to Fujian. A police car with two policemen are in front and there are three police cars with six policemen behind us," said Ye Sheng from the Jiaxing High-speed Traffic Police Brigade.

After starting the journey, the motorcade came across its first challenge when the branches of low-hanging trees had to be pruned to allow the submersible to pass under.

Due to strong winds and heavy rain, "Fendouzhe" reached the first service area in Hangzhou City at 22:00. In order to protect the submersible, team members had to spend the night in their cars to watch over the vessel.

The team set off again at 06:00 on the second day, with the road on this leg of the journey being quite bumpy forcing the motorcade to slow down.

After traveling to Fujian Province, the motorcade entered a mountainous area and faced the trouble of passing several tunnels. Everyone guarded "Fendouzhe" in the middle, leaving it with the highest passing space, with the team ultimately going through more than 80 tunnels of varying lengths in total.

The team stopped again at 14:00 to refasten the container which was full of the submersible's spare parts, before continuing their trip.

After almost a day on the road, the team arrived at their final destination in Fuzhou at 18:00. However, they still had to overcome one more obstacle as an overhead wire was in the way. The team members took out a specially prepared insulating pole and lifted the wire over the submersible, which allowed the giant "fish" to go through.

The motorcade finally arrived at the last toll station in Fuzhou after its mammoth journey from Wuxi, passing 15 prefecture-level cities in three provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Fujian, before reaching the Mawei Shipyard.

"The total distance is about 900 kilometers and a total of 24 hours were spent on the road,"said Liu Shuai, Chief Constructor of the manned submersible.

The submersible finally get on board the mothership "Tansuo-2" safe and sound.

The ship can carry 60 researchers and serve as the mother ship for China's new manned submersible "Fendouzhe" (Striver) and manned submersible Shenhai Yongshi (Deep Sea Warrior), capable of reaching depths of 10,000 meters and 4,500 meters, respectively.

The ship is 87.2 meters long and 18.8 meters wide, with a full-load displacement of 6,800 tonnes. It has a maximum speed of 14.2 knots and a cruising range of 15,000 nautical miles, longer than that of the previous-generation Tansuo-1.
