Storyline

Firefighters in east China's flood-hit Jiangxi Province moved swiftly to evacuate more than 3,000 residents on Sunday evening after a breach was found in an embankment of a nearby river.

Locals in the Sanjiao Township were seen being hastily helped to safety after the breach was found in the Xiuhe River, which connects to the major Poyang Lake.

The lake's water levels have continued to rise to dangerous levels due to continuous torrential rain, leading many monitoring stations to issue alerts.

Firefighters found a breach in a section of the Sanjiao embankment of the river at around 19:40 on Sunday. Upon discovering the breach, firefighters, soldiers and local volunteers immediately went to repair the dike and began to evacuate nearby residents.

At around 22:00, there were still a large number of villagers stranded at home, so firefighters went door to door to persuade them to leave as soon as possible, and helped elderly people, children and disabled villagers get on fire engines and buses.

After more than 10 hours of hard work, over 3,000 villagers from the threatened areas in Sanjiao Township were evacuated to safety.
