China has made hefty investment in major water conservancy projects and allocated more than 52 billion yuan for those projects this year, an official from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said on Monday.
Speaking at a press conference in Beijing, Su Wei, deputy secretary-general of the NDRC, said China has allocated 52.8 billion yuan (7.56 billion U.S. dollars) from the central budget to begin to construct some major water conservancy projects this year.
China will gradually construct a total of 150 major water conservancy projects beginning from this year, said Su.
Upon completion, those projects are expected to increase the flood control capacity by nine billion cubic meters, put some 2,950 kilometers' watercourses under control, increase the area of croplands with water irrigation by 1.86 million hectares, and add the annual water supply capacity by 42 billion cubic meters.
With a rough estimate investment of 1.29 trillion yuan (180 billion U.S. dollars), the 150 projects can directly or indirectly bring an investment of 6.6 trillion yuan (940 billion U.S. dollars).
