Storyline

The Chinese embassy in Germany on Saturday condemned the wrong remarks made by German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas concerning Hong Kong, urging the German side to stop interfering in China's internal affairs.

In the statement issued at the website of the embassy, the Chinese diplomatic mission expressed its strong indignation at and firm opposition to Germany's decision to suspend the extradition treaty with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) as announced by Maas, which followed the postponement of the 2020 Legislative Council (LegCo) General Election of the HKSAR due to the current COVID-19 outbreak.

The HKSAR government's decision to postpone the Legislative Council election due to the severe COVID-19 epidemic situation is a responsible move to protect the lives and health of Hong Kong residents, the statement said.

Meeting the mainstream public opinions, the HKSAR decision is in line with the Constitution, the HKSAR Basic Law and local laws of the HKSAR, the statement said, adding that it reflects the efforts of science-based epidemic control and embodies the sense of responsibility of protecting the lives and health of the Hong Kong residents.

The decision of the Returning Officers of the HKSAR to invalidate certain nominations for the Legislative Council election has sufficient legal basis. This decision is strictly in line with the Basic Law, the law on safeguarding national security in the HKSAR and the electoral laws of the SAR. Within the framework of "One Country, Two Systems", candidates for the legislature of the HKSAR must support the Basic Law wholeheartedly and pledge allegiance to the HKSAR of the People's Republic of China, according to the statement.

The German side's erroneous remarks on Hong Kong and suspension of the extradition treaty with Hong Kong are a serious breach of international law and basic norms governing international relations and are in gross violation of China's internal affairs, as Hong Kong affairs are China's internal affairs, the statement said.

The embassy firmly opposes them and reserves the right to react further, according to the statement.
