Storyline

The United States reported 58,500 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, bringing the total cases to 4,617,494 by 20:34 Eastern Standard Time, according to statistics from the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

The national fatalities reached 154,320, a daily hike of 1,009 cases, the CSSE tally showed.

The state of California reported the most cases, namely 506,592. Cases in Florida, Texas and New York all exceeded 400,000 to reach 480,028, 444,738 and 415,767, respectively.

The U.S. government is facing immense pressure to reach a new deal to salvage the economy from COVID-19, as a 600-U.S.-dollar-per week federal unemployment insurance benefit buoying millions of Americans expired on Friday.

White House officials and lawmakers said on Saturday that they've made progress during talks on the deal, but major differences remain between Republicans and Democrats.
