Search and rescue operations are in full swing in southwest China's Sichuan Province to evacuate residents stranded by heavy rain-triggered floods, which have left six people dead, five missing and some 100,000 people affected as of Wednesday.
In response to three days of heavy rainfall hitting many parts of the province, the provincial government has issued the first red rainstorm alert in the province in 7 years. China has a four-tier color-coded alert system, with red being the highest level, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
In the city of Guanghan, firefighters exerted all efforts to rescue residents in a residential compound that has been hit by sudden flooding since Tuesday.
On Tuesday, hundreds of residents were evacuated by rescuers with lifeboats. But rescue work was put on hold Wednesday morning, because of a rapid torrent that suddenly appeared in the middle of the street, toppling a lifeboat. After a few failed attempts, the rescues brought in bulldozers as an unusual tool to rescue people.
Anyone too frail to be transported by bulldozers has to be evacuated in small groups by professional scuba diving rescuers, also known as frogmen.
The city of Guanghan has issued a red rainstorm alert for the fourth time in 24 hours. China's meteorological authorities have warned of more heavy downpours and possible geological disasters in the coming week.
From Monday evening till Wednesday, the Anzhou District of Mianyang City in the province was hit by torrential rain, with the maximum precipitation exceeding 300 millimeters.
At 13:00 Tuesday, part of the embankment of Anchang River section in Anzhou District collapsed due to the heavy rainfall, with a section of more than 100 meters on the left bank washed away, and with the right bank levee all collapsing. Besides, the foundation of the dam was hollowed out.
The relevant emergency response departments immediately dispatched rescue teams to evacuate affected residents living in villages near the embankment. As of 01:03 Wednesday, all 121 people from 51 households have been relocated, with 39 of whom relocated to centralized temporary settlements and 82 moved to the homes of their relatives or friends.
So far, emergency repair of the damaged embankment is still underway.
Meanwhile, many villages in Tashui Town of Mianyang's Anzhou District were flooded due to the torrential rain on Tuesday. The local firefighting department immediately dispatched rescue forces to the scene, to evacuate the stranded residents by lifeboats.
As of 24:00 Tuesday, the local firefighting and rescue workers have evacuated a total of 244 people trapped by floods, including one pregnant woman.
At 04:00 Wednesday, landslides and mudslides smashed the Shimian to Liziping section of the G5 national Beijing-Kunming expressway in Ya'an City, blocking the traffic of both directions. Rescue teams and large machinery were sent to clear the road and resume traffic immediately.
So far, the two-way traffic on the Chengdu to Xichang section of the expressway are still blocked, with clearing work still underway.
In the provincial capital city of Chengdu, many road sections have been flooded due to heavy rains since Monday night.
At around 15:00 Tuesday, a driver ignored the traffic police's warning and risked his life to pull through a flooded road section, resulting in a power cutoff and permanent shutdown of the doors and windows of the car. At the critical moment when the vehicle gradually sank, local traffic police officer Wang Pan and traffic wardens Liu Chengkun and Liu Xing rushed to the man's rescue.
With the use of a hammer and other demolition equipment provided by nearby residents, the police officers and the traffic wardens smashed the right window of the car and the driver managed to escape.
Seasonal flooding strikes large parts of China annually, especially in its central and southern regions, but the rainfall has been unusually high this year.
