"What we do now at this stage is that at least three of the major hospitals in Beirut have been left non-functional because of the blast. Another three hospitals are functioning well below their normal capacity. What that means is we've lost around five hundred beds in those two hospitals. In addition, WHO has been supporting an assessment of 55 primary healthcare clinics and health centers across the city. The preliminary results are in on that. We know now that around 50 percent, just over 50 percent are non-functional."

Storyline

Over half of the healthcare facilities in Lebanon’s capital Beirut have been left non-functional following the deadly explosions last week, said an official with the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday.

The explosions hit the Port of Beirut on Aug 4, killing 171 people and injuring over 6,000 others. While some local hospitals were overwhelmed and suffered from shortages of supplies and beds, other hospitals were entirely shut down due to severe damage.

Richard Brennan, Regional Emergency Director of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region, confirmed that over half of the 55 healthcare clinics and centers in Beirut were unable to receive patients.

We know now that around 50 percent, just over 50 percent are non-functional," said Brennan at a virtual press conference in Cairo.

On the same day, Iman Shankiti, a WHO representative for Lebanon, said the COVID-19 anti-epidemic measures were almost halted amid rescue operations, with infections being reported at some hospitals.

As the contagious disease continues to spread in the community, the Eastern Mediterranean country reported 292 new infections on Wednesday, taking the total number to 7,413 while the death toll went up by two to 89.

Lebanon's health ministry has warned that the spread of COVID-19 will worsen in the coming two weeks.
