China has made a decisive achievement in its battle against poverty, reaching the final stage of its mission to eradicate extreme poverty by the end of 2020.

Of the 832 severely impoverished counties recorded in 2016, 780 counties have shaken off poverty in the past five years.

Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is among them.

About 70 percent of Maonan people, or 64,500 people, live in Huanjiang County where the poverty headcount ratio had dropped to 1.48 percent by the end of 2019.

This year, the county was removed from the country's list of impoverished counties.

"The entire Maonan ethnic group was lifted out of poverty. It is unprecedented in nearly a thousand years for our ethnic group. We are holding a most solemn ceremony to celebrate this significant event," said Tan Meichun, a villager of Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County.

By the end of 2019, the number of poor rural residents in the country plunged from 98.99 million in 2012 to 5.51 million in 2019, showed data from China's National Bureau of Statistics.

To conquer the "last bastion" by 2020, local government officials traveled to the most treacherous terrains in the remaining 1,113 villages, leading investigations, fostering poverty relief programs and supervising the implementation of the policy.

Meanwhile, the central government's special funds for poverty alleviation have been increasing year by year, from 66.7 billion yuan (about 9.96 billion U.S. dollars) in 2016 to over 139 billion yuan (about 19.7 billion U.S. dollars) in 2020.

So far, 90 percent of the people living in poverty have benefited directly or indirectly from industries fostered by the government. Among the population, two thirds landed a job in local companies or in other provinces through the East-West Pairing-off Cooperation program.

So far, there are 52 counties that haven't shaken off poverty, but are now getting more support from the central government.
