"And it really has to do with management and with political commitment. So President Xi gave a very brave statement of the need to eradicate poverty by 2020, and that unleashed a lot of resources from the government to fight poverty. It also unleashed a proactive monitoring response to track how changes had occurred. And the effect has been quite interesting. We work with the International Poverty Reduction Center of China, IPRCC, and so we had the privilege to visit poverty-reduction activities in three provinces of China. Then what is different is that the integration under LGOP, the Leading Group on Poverty, of many ministries into a focused program which brings historic change within two years for a county, or a village, or a household, has been tremendous. And that's something that many other governments wish to do, but they have not been able to do."

Storyline

Experts and officials from around the world have spoken highly of the fruitful results of China's poverty alleviation, saying the practical measures taken by the Chinese government have encouraged other developing countries, and promoted the development of poverty elimination projects and international cooperation across the globe.

Some experts recently commended China's measures and achievements to its commitment.

"It really has to do with management and with political commitment. And that's something that many other governments wish to do, but they have not been able to do," said Sabina Alkire, director of the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI).

Nadia Isler is the director of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Lab. She said the experience China has gained over the years is valuable for many other countries.

"At the global level, huge progress has been made in decreasing extreme poverty in the past decade. And in that regard China has certainly played a very important role. China has valuable experiences and lessons to share with other countries," she noted.

Peter Anaadumba, the Regional South-South Cooperation Officer Africa at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO UN), stated that China has played a key role in addressing sustainable development goals and offering practical solutions on poverty reduction for other countries.

"China has taken significant stride to partner with institutions such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO, to contribute to other countries [by offering] Chinese experience, Chinese expertise and so forth. China has set up a trust fund and has contributed to a total of 80 million [U.S. dollars]. This will support a number of countries in Africa," he said.
