Storyline

Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest China is equipped with enough medical devices and supplies to tackle the latest COVID-19 cases in Kashgar Prefecture, said a health official during a press conference on Wednesday.

Xinjiang had a total of 22 existing confirmed cases and 161 asymptomatic ones as of Tuesday, all in Kashgar's Shufu County, the regional health commission said Wednesday.

After tackling two rounds of COVID-19 outbreaks, Xinjiang is well-prepared for the latest situation, with sufficient medical personnel and equipment to treat patients.

"Designated hospitals were immediately put into operation after inpatient areas were disinfected, and medical teams and supplies were put into place. The medical treatment teams were formed by medical professionals with actual combat skills and experience in respiratory, infectious, critical care, hospital infection management, and nursing," said Gu Yingsu, deputy director of the regional health commission.

All asymptomatic patients are undergoing medical observation and infected patients with symptoms are receiving timely treatment, Gu noted.

After the infections occurred, the National Health Commission dispatched top experts to Xinjiang to help provide medical treatment.

"Xinjiang has comprehensively strengthened the capacity of COVID-19 designated hospitals, with more inpatient areas, beds, and medical equipment added to ensure COVID-19 patients can be efficaciously treated at any time. By far, designated hospitals have been equipped with sufficient medical equipment, medicine, and protective materials, such as ECMO, ventilators, and CRRT. Shufu County is well prepared to treat COVID-19 patients," said Gu.
