Storyline

The United States reported 75,468 new COVID-19 cases, including 1,000 deaths in a single day, as of 19:24 Eastern Standard Time on Wednesday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

The CSSE said the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country reached 8,848,875, including a death toll of 227,604 on Wednesday.

Since October, at least 29 states have hit record highs in the number of daily new COVID-19 cases since the outbreak began, data from the CSSE showed.

An internal memo from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) obtained by ABC News showed that, "From Oct 20 to 26 increased 22.7 percent compared to the previous seven-day period, and recorded deaths increased 10.5 percent during that time period," while positivity rate of COVID-19 tests increased to 6.2 percent.

ABC News also reported that 20 percent of hospitals across the U.S. have used more than 80 percent of their ICU beds, up around 2 percent to 3 percent than the summertime peak, according to the memo.

In facing such a daily case spike across the U.S., Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, pointed out during an online video interview with CNBC on Wednesday that, "There's gonna be a whole lot of pain in this country with regard to additional cases and hospitalizations, and deaths," if no other effective measures are taken to cope with the deadly virus.
