Storyline

Northwest China's Gansu Province has lifted its all 75 impoverished counties out of poverty, the provincial government announced on Saturday.

The last eight poverty-stricken counties in the prefectural areas of Linxia, Longnan, Dingxi and Qingyang, respectively, have been removed from the poverty list.

"Through strict supervisions and concerted efforts, we have taken steady steps to ensure people in the last eight poverty-stricken counties access to adequate food and clothing, compulsory education, and basic medical services and housing, and improved the quality of poverty reduction. The provincial government has approved to remove the eight counties from the poverty list," Ren Yanshun, director of the Gansu Provincial Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development, told a briefing.

In October this year, local authorities carried out checks including both data reviews and random field investigations on relocation of poverty-stricken people, compulsory education, housing security, poverty alleviation through business development and other key indicators.

"In the eight counties we just removed from the poverty list, the performance of some key indicators such as the per capita net income increase, compulsory education, basic medical services and housing are better than those of former removed counties. About 98.5 percent of the people agreed that they have shaken off poverty, and 99.3 percent of the interviewed farmers said their livelihood has been improved significantly," Ren added.

In the next step, Gansu Province will continue developing its special animal husbandry and farming industries. In addition, efforts about industries, employment and public welfare jobs will be made to prevent relevant people from falling into poverty again.
