Storyline

The US trade war with China could only harm itself instead of resolving its own problems, said foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian at a press briefing in Beijing on Friday.

Zhao made the statement when commenting on a report released by the US-China Business Council, which says that the United States has long benefited from US-China trade, citing the facts that in 2019 U.S.'s exports to China created 1.2 million jobs for the United States, and the trade war with China failed to boost the U.S. economy and on the contrary it led to a slowdown in U.S. economic growth, resulting in an estimated peak loss of 245,000 jobs.

Zhao said: "I've taken note of the report. The report is a full illustration to the nature of the Sino-US economic and trade relations, which is mutual benefit and win-win. The trade war launched by the Trump administration against China could only harm itself instead of resolving its own problems."

He said: "We hope that the United States lends an attentive ear to the rational voices at home, work together with China toward the same direction and create a favorable atmosphere for the healthy development of the Sino-US economic and trade cooperation so as to better enhance the wellbeing of the people of the two countries."
