Storyline

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 23.5 million, with over 390,000 deaths, on Friday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

The case count had risen to 23,503,587 with 391,624 deaths as of 19:22 Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Friday, according to the CSSE tally.

According to the latest data from the Johns Hopkins University, the number of COVID-19 deaths in the United States in the past two weeks broke the country's record for the highest COVID-19 death number in 14 days.

The cumulative number of deaths will pass 400,000 by Jan. 20 at this rate, experts said.

According to the data, the U.S. reported a total of 42,800 COVID-19 deaths in the first 14 days of January with a daily average of over 3,050, the highest since the outbreak began in the country.

Projections released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that an additional 14,400 Americans will die from the virus over the next six days.

The situation for long-term care facilities in the U.S. remained very serious.

According to a latest tally by the New York Times, at least 136,000 residents and staff members of long-term care facilities in the country have died from COVID-19.

Statistics showed that about five percent of confirmed COVID-19 cases and 36 percent of deaths related to the disease were reported in long-term care facilities. In 12 of the 50 U.S. states, COVID-19 deaths reported in such facilities accounted for more than a half of the state total of all deaths caused by illness.

Despite the situation, many seniors in long-term care facilities are not prioritized for vaccination.

Some seniors in Arkansas reportedly said they had to wait two to three months before they could get the new vaccine. Nursing officials in Florida, California, Arizona, Indiana and Pennsylvania have also complained about the slow vaccination process for seniors.
