Storyline

The sensational accusations against Xinjiang-related issues are nothing but vicious speculation of some biased institutions and individuals to serve their political interests, said Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday.

Addressing a meeting of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, Switzerland, via video link, Wang said the essence of Xinjiang-related issues is to fight against violence, terrorism and separatism.

The Chinese government has been actively working to counter extremism by fully implementing the UN Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism and learning from similar practices in other countries, Wang noted, adding that China's approaches are in line with the principles and spirit of the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.

"With the efforts of all ethnic groups, Xinjiang has reported zero violent terrorist cases for more than four consecutive years. Xinjiang enjoys social security and stability, as well as continuous development. People there live and work in peace and contentment. Workers of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang choose their jobs following their own will while enjoying various labor rights and interests. They have never been subject to any restriction on their personal freedom," said Wang.

Noting people of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang enjoy the freedom of religious belief, Wang then refuted lies about Xinjiang including the non-existent "religious oppression."

"Xinjiang protects all ethnic groups' right to freedom of religious belief in accordance with the law. There are more than 24,000 mosques there, representing a mosque for every 530 Muslims on average. Those basic facts show that there has never been so-called 'genocide', 'forced labor' or 'religious oppression' in Xinjiang. Such sensational accusations are fabricated out of ignorance and prejudice. They are nothing but vicious political hypes, which are totally opposed to the facts," said Wang.

The door of Xinjiang is always open. All foreigners who have visited Xinjiang can learn about the facts and the truth on the spot, the Chinese foreign minister said, adding that China also welcomes the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to visit the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
