Traffic has been affected in Beijing as light snow hit China's capital city Monday morning on the day when over a million elementary and middle school students here started their first schooling day of the spring semester of 2021.

The snowfall and rain have started on Sunday night in Beijing’s Yanqing, Pinggu, Huairou and Daxing districts and spread to other districts early Monday morning.

The daily traffic index in Beijing jumped to 8.1 as of 07:50, indicating severe traffic congestion. The traffic index ranges from 0 to 10, with the number increasing as congestion worsens.

A total of 128 bus routes in the city had been altered or suspended as of 07:30 due to the snow and frozen roads.

Disruptions were also reported on certain highways entering and exiting Beijing.
