Storyline

The BRICS should build an alternative financial system to defend the competitiveness and effectiveness of free market forces, said a Russian industrialist recently ahead of the 14th BRICS Summit to be held on Thursday.

Oleg Deripaska, also the founder of Basic Element, one of Russia's largest industrial groups, said that the five BRICS countries should set up an alternative payment system, debt market, among others, to better protect investment.

"BRICS should build [an] alternative payment system, debt market, capital market, [and work together on] how to protect investment, how to exercise in the property rights, in titles, IP rights. We have a new reality, [and the] infrastructure could be in a way sophisticated for all of this. And we can use in a digital economy, we can use instrument which will implement efficiency of artificial intelligence, and product which develops," said Deripaska.

He also said that the BRICS should bring forward a society of common prosperity and stay alert against the West's tendency to weaponize the global financial system.

"And finally, it's all should bring, as China said, a society of a common prosperity. And this is something, of course, BRICS should pay a huge attention. Otherwise weaponized Western financial system will play a role of switch, which will definitely destroy competitiveness and effectiveness of free market forces," said Deripaska.

BRICS, which groups the five emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, represents 42 percent of the world's population and a fifth of global GDP.
