Storyline

Indian students are enjoying enhanced job prospects through a practical training program offered at the Lu Ban Workshop at the Chennai Institute of Technology, which has become a cornerstone of China-India cooperation in the field of vocational education.

The program, named after ancient Chinese woodcraft master Lu Ban, is the first workshop of its kind to be established in BRICS countries and has continued to expand its influence since starting in 2017.

The quality of vocational education has been greatly improved over the past five years with cooperative training projects including in the fields of industrial robots, photovoltaic power generation, CNC
(computer numerical control) maintenance and 3D printing all being successively put into operation.

Some 200 students and 15 instructors have been trained in north China's Tianjin Municipality and many of them believe that this landmark China-India cooperation project will benefit the "Made in India" strategy being promoted by their nation.

Instructors involved in the project particularly praised the distinctly "hands-on" approach of the training regime which enables them to pass on useful practical skills to their young charges.

"The training that we have in Chennai is basically the book-based training. The real-time technological training, we are lacking. So, the training which we get from China is the real-time technology, hands-on experience. The training which we get from the Chinese people, I can directly deliver to the students over here, where they can get the real-time technology and the hands-on practice. So that is very helpful for them to get a place in a very good company," said Kishore Ravi Kumar, an instructor at the Chennai Institute of Technology.

"Many other engineering colleges or institutes won't have this much facilities and this much dedicated faculties who got trained from China for more than a month or two months. Most of the institutes, they won't have this kind of facilities to give to students, and our students stay a long [time and move] forward when they are going to the industry," said Gokul, another instructor.

The professional skills of the students who were trained in the Lu Ban Workshop have also been tested in India's labor market, with international enterprises satisfied with their potential.

"The Lu Ban Workshop gives 100 percent assurity that you will gain the very best practical knowledge that each and every multinational company (MNC) company wants. And from learning from this, I think you will be in the top tier [of candidates]," said Janani, a student who benefited from the workshop.

Encouraged by the accomplishments over the past years, officials from the Chennai Institute of Technology are now looking forward to deepen and optimize cooperation with China so as to help make more contributions to Indian society.
