Citizens from dozens of provinces in Turkey staged protests on Tuesday to condemn the massacre of Palestinian protesters at the Gaza Strip on Monday and to also claim Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
"Jerusalem is Palestine and for the Palestinians," read one of the many banners that hundreds of protesters held during their march through central Istiklal Street in Istanbul.
Meanwhile, other posters were calling for, "Freedom for Palestine, boycott Israel," and, "Nullify all agreements with Israel," referring to diplomatic and trade relations between Israel and Turkey.
A total of 62 Palestinians were killed and thousands were injured by Israeli soldiers, when over 40,000 protesters congregated alongside the fence separating Gaza from Israel.
The demonstration on Tuesday commemorated the 70 year anniversary of the,"Nakba," ("Catastrophe" in Arabic),where Palestinians recalled the founding of the State of Israel and the first Arab-Israeli War (1948-1949) whose consequence was the massive and forced exodus of hundreds of thousands of Arabs from Palestine.
Protests also took place in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey, on Tuesday afternoon, where a small group of protesters crossed the police cordon and threw eggs at the residence of the Israeli ambassador, while in the afternoon other political groups read manifestos before the Israeli consulate in Istanbul.
Other small-scale demonstrations took place in several Turkish cities such as Smyrna, Bursa, Gaziantep and Diyarbakir.
Meanwhile, three Turkish parliamentary parties on the same day signed a joint manifesto denouncing, "Israel's barbaric attacks and massacre," against protesters in Gaza and pledged to, "always back the rights of the Palestinians."
The fourth formation of the Turkish parliament, known as the leftist Democratic Party of Peoples (HDP), proposed,"ending all economic, military and political agreements," with Israel, a proposal that was rejected by the conservative government led by the Justice and Development Party (AKP).
The largest opposition party, the Social Democratic Party of the people (CHP), called for a unilateral cancellation of the 2016 agreement whereby Turkey and Israel resumed diplomatic relations, which had been frozen in the wake of an Israeli assault on the flotilla of Gaza in 2010, in which 10 Turkish activists were killed.
