Chinese premier Li Keqiang and top legislator Li Zhanshu met with visiting Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel respectively in Beijing on Thursday.

During his meeting with Diaz-Canel, Premier Li said that China and Cuba have a deep traditional friendship. The two countries have been trusting and supporting each other all the way. During the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Diaz-Canel, the two heads of states planned future development of China-Cuba relations.

China is willing to consolidate political trust and deepen pragmatic cooperation with Cuba to bring the bilateral relations to a new high, said the premier.

Noting that China always upholds an open attitude and win-win principles to promote cooperation with Cuba, Li said China stands ready to strengthen bilateral cooperation in major areas including new energy, information communication and biological pharmacy.

The Chinese government supports its enterprises to invest and develop in Cuba and is willing to import more products with Cuba's unique advantages, Li said, also expressing the willingness to promote knowledge cooperation and development experience communication with Cuba.

For his part, Diaz-Canel said that China is Cuba's good friend. Cuba expects to consolidate and carry forward the traditional friendship with China while keeping closer high-level exchanges, deepening pragmatic cooperation in various areas and enhancing mutual learning with China to promote common prosperity.

Li Zhanshu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, also met with Diaz-Canel on the same day, calling for more cooperation between the two countries' legislatures.

Li noted that as President Xi had said, no matter how situations change, China always attaches great importance to its long-term friendship with Cuba.

The NPC is willing to cooperate with Cuba's National Assembly of People's Power to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of states, strengthening exchange and cooperation to promote the China-Cuba relations to achieve further development, said Li.

Diaz-Canel said that the party, government and people of Cuba will continue to carry forward and consolidate its special friendship with China, and hope the two countries' legislative institutions will further enhance exchanges.

On Thursday morning, Diaz-Canel visited Tian'anmen Square and laid a wreath at the Monument to the People's Heroes.
