2. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Hua Chunying, spokeswoman, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"China pays close attention to relevant UN reports and comments and is shocked by and deeply concerned about human rights violations in the United States and some European Union (EU) countries. Recently, the human rights situation in the United States and some EU countries has been deteriorated, the gap between the rich and the poor has become increasingly serious, and the problems of racial discrimination and xenophobia have intensified. Tens of thousands of migrant children are also being held against their will in the United States, and the family separation policy is responsible for a number of human tragedies. As the UN high commissioner for human rights has said, the detention of migrant children by the U.S. may constitute 'cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment' prohibited by the international laws."

4. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Hua Chunying, spokeswoman, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
"The protection of human rights should not be merely a matter of rhetoric, nor is it an excuse to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries. It should be a matter of practical and responsible action. Tomorrow is the Human Rights Day, and we hope that the U.S. can take this as an opportunity to fulfill its human rights commitments, earnestly safeguard the basic rights of all groups, especially vulnerable groups, and truly contribute to the development of human rights at home and abroad."

The United States should fulfill its commitments on human rights, and safeguard basic rights of vulnerable groups, said Hua Chunying, a spokeswoman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, on Monday in Beijing.

A report of the UN independent expert on human rights and international solidarity criticized the populism and the use of racist and xenophobic language to describe immigrants by the U.S. administration, as well as practices to separate children from their parents.
