"Besides some of our supportive treatments, we focus more on providing traditional Chinese medicine to our patients, making sure that each of them can take their decoction every day. Secondly, we also have a machine for making dispensing granules of the traditional Chinese medicine when a temporary formula is needed. The decoction can be easily obtained when the formula granules are infused with hot water. At the same time, we are going to teach the patients to practice Tai Chi and the Baduanjin movements as recovery exercises. Integrated with treatments such as acupuncture, massage and moxibustion, we hope to achieve an optimal curative effect."

Storyline

A traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)-oriented temporary hospital was put into use in Wuhan, the epicenter of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak in central China's Hubei Province, on Friday.

The first batch of 50 non-critical pneumonia patients affected with the new virus arrived at the hospital, namely Dahuashan, at 17:00 Friday.

The temporary hospital is converted from a gymnasium and is now capable of receiving 400 patients. At the inpatient area, facilities including electric heaters, electric blankets and air purifiers are also provided for patients.

A supporting medical team of 209 experts from five provinces, led by Zhang Boli, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and also the president of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, will carry out integrated treatment of TCM and Western medicine on patients there.

Integrated with treatments such as acupuncture, massage and moxibustion, we hope to achieve an optimal curative effect," said Zhang.

It is said that another 400 beds will be added to the hospital after the ongoing construction is completed.

As of 24:00 Thursday, the virus has infected more than 63,000 and claimed over 1,300 lives in the provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, according to China's National Health Commission. A total of 6,723 people had been discharged from hospital after recovery, with 269 cuts from Hubei after examination; 1,380 people had died of the disease, with 108 cuts from Hubei due to double-counting.
