Storyline

The 14-day Universal Community Testing Program (UCTP) concluded on Monday, identifying 32 confirmed COVID-19 cases, according to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government on Tuesday.

About 1,783,000 specimens were tested under the program over the past two weeks, with 46 tested positive.

The Center for Health Protection (CHP) completed re-testing of 45 samples by 15:00 on Tuesday. Among them, five overlapped with those previously traced to have close contacts with confirmed cases and eight others were those who have relapsed into positive after recovery. The remaining one failed the retest due to insufficient specimen. The CHP has notified the patient for further test.

The 32 confirmed new cases included 13 asymptomatic cases, which demonstrated that the mass screening has helped identify silent carriers of the virus and cut the transmission chain in the community, the CHP said.

Among the 87 close contacts of the 32 new cases, five have been confirmed COVID-19 positive and there is possibility that more patients will be found as the tracking work continues, the authority said.

At the request of the HKSAR government, the central government sent a nucleic acid testing team to help Hong Kong in the UCTP to enhance the COVID-19 testing capacity.

Since Aug 2, more than 570 members of the nucleic acid testing team from the mainland have arrived in Hong Kong for the lab testing work.
