Storyline

The living conditions in China's Tianhe space station core cabin is excellent, said Bo Linhou, designer of China's space station.

Bo said that after the Shenzhou-12 spacecraft rendezvous and docked with Tianhe, the three astronauts carried by Shenzhou-12 entered the core module through four doors.

First, they have to open the door of the reentry capsule of Shenzhou-12 and came to the orbital module. There is a corridor about one meter long between the front end of the orbital module and the circular node module at the front end of the core module.

It was through the corridor that the astronauts finally entered the core module. However, to open the front door of the orbital module, the astronauts must first adjust the air pressure on both sides of the door.

"We first need to restore the air pressure in the docking corridor to balance its air pressure with the air pressure in the modules on both sides so that the astronauts could easily open the front door of the orbital module and then enter the docking corridor," said Gao Xu, a senior designer of the Shenzhou-12 spaceship.

After entering the corridor, the astronaut will open the front door of the node module with a special key.

"Our manned spacecraft has also carried a key to the space station. They could use the key to open the door of the space station," said Gao.

Finally, they need open the rear door of the node module before starting a three-month space life in the core cabin.

Bai Linhou, deputy chief designer of the space station, said that after the space station is fully completed, normally a crew of three astronauts will be regularly stationed there. So when astronauts take a shift, there could be six astronauts at most at the space station at the same time, which requires the space station to provide enough space for astronauts to work and live in.

"The Tiangong-1 space lab and the Tiangong-2 space lab provided 15 cubic meters of usable space. But now with the space provided by the visiting manned spacecraft and cargo spacecraft, the available space of the space station is close to 150 cubic meters with a growth rate of nearly 10 times. If we say that previously astronauts lived in a double room, then they will be living in a villa," said Bai.

According to the design, the core module and the experimental module of the space station are equipped with three independent sleeping areas, which provide a more independent and comfortable resting environment for the astronauts to stay in orbit for a long time.

"There are two washing rooms in the core module and experimental module, and an area for doing exercises," said Bai.

To meet the needs of follow-up development and experiments, the design team has made it possible for the space station to expand.

"We can further expand our current three-module space station combination into a four-module cross-shaped combination in the future," said Bai.
