The outcomes of China's fifth national economic census showed that the country's economic development has experienced positive changes in total scale, structural optimization, green transformation and other aspects, said Kang Yi, head of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), on Thursday.
Kang Yi released the results of China's fifth national economic census at a press conference held by the State Council Information Office in Beijing.
The Chinese economy is having a more solid foundation for further growth, according to data from the census.
China's 2023 gross domestic product (GDP) reached 129.4 trillion yuan (about 18 trillion U.S. dollars).
By the end of 2023, there were 33.27 million legal entities in the secondary and tertiary industries in China, up 52.7 percent from the end of 2018. The total assets of such legal entities were 1439.1 trillion yuan, up by 57.4 percent from the end of 2018.
China is seeing a better structure of economic development.
"The number of operating entities in the service sector has increased significantly, becoming an important force in supporting economic growth and promoting high-quality employment. In 2023, the added value of the tertiary industry accounted for 56.3 percent of GDP, an increase of over 2 percentage points from 2018," said Kang.
By the end of 2023, the number of corporate enterprises in China's manufacturing industry rose by 23.8 percent from the level at the end of 2018, with their total assets increasing by 41.7 percent to 151 trillion yuan.
The country has also upgraded its coordinated regional development, with its central and western regions gaining larger proportions of the total economy, and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the Yangtze River Economic Belt, the Yangtze River Delta and the nine provincial regions along the Yellow River all achieving rapid growth in the numbers of legal entities in the secondary and tertiary industries.
With sci-tech innovation empowering transformation and upgrading of industries, China has also sped up pace in making relevant industries higher-end.
By the end of 2023, there were 53,000 high-technology manufacturing corporate enterprises above the designated size, an increase of 57.4 percent compared with that at the end of 2018, accounting for 11.5 percent of the manufacturing corporate enterprises above the designated size, an increase of 2 percentage points compared with that at the end of 2018.
At the end of 2023, there were 65,000 high-technology service corporate enterprises above the designated size, accounting for 25.7 percent of the service corporate enterprises above the designated size.
In particular, the fifth national economic census included the digital economy for the first time.
China had 2.92 million corporate enterprises engaged in the core industries of the digital economy, with 36.16 million persons employed as of the end of 2023. The total yearly business revenue for the core industries of the digital economy reached 48.45 trillion yuan.
"Compared with the results of the fourth national economic census, the outcomes this time showed that China's economic development has undergone many positive changes in terms of total scale, structural optimization, innovation-driven growth, security guarantee, green transformation and other aspects, proving that the Chinese economy displays solid foundation, strong resilience and huge potential. China's high-quality development has achieved significant progress," said Kang.
China carried out four national economic censuses in 2004, 2008, 2013 and 2018, respectively, and started its fifth national economic census in 2023.
