UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called on all countries to deliver on the promise of the landmark Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action to achieve the gender equality and the empowerment of women.
The UN chief made the call at the opening ceremony of the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) which opened on Monday.
In his speech, Guterres urged all countries to deliver on their commitments, including increasing investments in gender equality, stepping up support for women's organizations, encouraging women's leadership in technology, guaranteeing women's participation in peacebuilding, and ensuring women's leadership in decision-making at every level and all walks of life.
"Now is the time for those of us who care about equality for women and girls to stand up and to speak out. Now is the time for the world to accelerate progress and deliver on the promise of Beijing," said Guterres.
The Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action was adopted at the 1995 World Conference on Women held in Chinese capital city of Beijing. It is a global framework for gender equality and a historic milestone in the development of women's rights globally.
The CSW, a pivotal forum dedicated to promoting and safeguarding the rights of women and girls worldwide, is taking place from March 10 to 21 at the UN headquarters in New York.
