The British ambassador to the United Nations was putting unilateral pressure on the joint investigative mechanism without even hiding and trying to pressure to produce facts that he needed, Russia envoy said Wednesday.
Vladimir Safronkov made the remarks refuting the British ambassador Matthew Rycroft's accusation at a UN Security Council emergency meeting on an alleged chemical weapon attack in Syria.
"You're not doing anything about the situation. You are doing one thing. You are submitting drafts in the Security Council that only provoke - ah - and you are doing another thing. You're putting unilateral pressure on the joint investigative mechanism," said Safronkov by looking at his accuser directly in the eye.
It is reported that at least 70 people were killed, 200 others were wounded in a gas attack in a rebel-held area in Syria's northwestern province of Idlib on Tuesday.
The British envoy pointed his finger in the direction of Safronkov and asked "what's your plan - it doesn't look like terrorism to me. It looks like the work of Assad!"
"Those consequences are painted on the stricken faces of the children of Khan Sheikhoun killed potentially by a regime that will stop at nothing to hold on to power," said Rycroft.
The U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley made the emotional case for action to the Security Council, holding up grim pictures from Tuesday's alleged gas attack on civilians in Syria.
"We don't yet know everything about yesterday's attack, but there are many things we do know. We know that yesterday's attack bears all the hallmarks of the Assad regime's use of chemical weapons," said Haley.
"If confirmed, this would constitute the single largest chemical weapons attack in the Syria Arabic Republic since the attack in eastern Guta in 2013," said Kim Won-soo, UN High Commissioner for Disarmament.
Most Western governments say they suspect the government of Bashar al-Assad is behind the use of chemicals in Khan Sheikhoun in Syria's Idlib Province.
Both Damascus and ally Russia deny it, citing an opposition chemical arms dump that got bombed as the cause.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that "the Syrian army doesn't possess chemical weapons and hasn't used them before in any Syrian city."
The Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday that the deadly gas contamination in Idlib was caused by the explosion of chemical weapons produced by the rebels.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday that Russia and its armed forces will continue operations to support the Syrian government's anti-terrorism efforts.
China's permanent representative to the UN Liu Jieyi said that China was "deeply shocked" at the suspected use of chemicals as weapons which have resulted in enormous civilian casualties, and called on all parties to create conditions for political solution to the Syria crisis instead of making troubles for it.
"China supports the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and other relevant agencies of the United Nations in conducting comprehensive, objective and fair probes into all cases – I'm here stressing 'all' – of using chemicals as weapons within Syria," said Liu.
"Political solution is the only way out for the Syrian issue. We hope that all the parties should create conditions for the political solution instead of making troubles for it," he added.
