Storyline

Shanghai will work to establish the network coverage of super-fast 5G technology in downtown areas of the city by the end of 2019, according to the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization on Monday.

On Monday it was also announced that the Shanghai Hongqiao Station, one of the major terminals on China's railway network, would become the world's first indoor facility to be covered by the 5G network, with the move signaling Shanghai's official inauguration of the 5G setting.

Officials say the station will be fully covered with a comprehensive 5G system by the end of September. By then the data flow speed will be capable of hitting as fast as 1.2 gigabytes per second, enabling users to download a two-hour-long high definition movie within a matter of moments.

The 5G coverage in the station will also make it possible for travelers to access high speed internet services, and make video calls in high definition. The introduction of the next generation technology helps create a smart and intelligent train station and will improve the management efficiency and service quality in Hongqiao.

"The 5G technology not only brings about a large bandwidth, but also plays a role in controlling, adjusting and other facility management," said Li Xin, chief marketing officer of Huawei Digital Indoor System (DIS).

Zhang Jianming, Deputy Director of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, said the lightening-fast technology will soon become widely available in public areas.

"We will gradually ensure places like shopping centers and medical services are covered by 5G technology," said Zhang.
