Storyline

Violence continued in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) as rioters blocked roads and threw petrol bombs at police over the weekend.

A two-kilometer procession from one of Hong Kong's busiest commercial centers - Causeway Bay - to the HKSAR government headquarters turned ugly quickly.

The rioters threw petrol bombs and hard objects at the police, knocking the traffic lights and setting a fire.

Many of them were very young. One said he is 18 years old.

For 22-year-old Cyrus, it was his first time to observe the riots so intimately.

"My opinion is right now, what we are seeing actually we have to ask ourselves, 'Do you have the evidence to support?' If you don't have this evidence, you just hear from your friends or hear from the internet. Are they really trustworthy? This is the question I am still thinking. Therefore today I'm here to watch the whole things happening," said Cyrus.

"I really worry about this group of people because do they really know about the protest, like the background and the purpose, and how about the information. I'm just afraid that whether they have individual thinking," he added.

Hong Kong police deployed water cannons and fired tear gas to disperse the rioters.

In a statement, the police said after giving repeated warnings to the protesters in vain, they used minimum force.

Since June, Hong Kong has witnessed escalating violence that originated from protests over the proposed ordinance amendments concerning fugitive offenders transfers.

Although the HKSAR government has withdrawn the amendments, violence continued as protesters veered off their original agenda to raise the ante, causing a split in society and taking a heavy toll on the economy.

On Thursday evening, Chief Executive of the HKSAR Carrie Lam and other officials had candid communication with the members of the public at the first "Community Dialog."

Lam said she would continue reaching out to people through dialogs to seek a way out for Hong Kong.
