Storyline

Gyalre Yeshe from a poor family in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region has realized her dream of becoming a female pilot, thanks to national efforts in poverty relief.

The 22-year-old Tibetan woman is one of the 28 who participated in a pilot training program for those from poor families in Tibet in 2016. She is the first woman to gain a pilot license among the trainees.

Gyalre Yeshe said driving a commercial helicopter was her wildest dream and she couldn't help cheering at the opportunity.

"When I was in high school, my teacher called me and said I could go to an interview and find a chance. A test for a pilot license costs more than one million yuan (142,900 U.S. dollars). I was excited at the news. I could hardly believe such a good opportunity came to me," she said.

For most of the time, training was tough. Gyalre Yeshe said when she first tried helicopter driving, her shaking hands could barely control the handle. So she and other trainees practiced balancing balls on table tennis bats every day.

Despite the hardship, Gyalre Yeshe said, "Because I have chosen this road, I never think of giving up."

So far, the female pilot has more than 300 flying hours and she is proud of herself.

Days ago, she took her parents aboard and flew around the magnificent Potala Palace in Lhasa. Her family found the tour fresh and interesting.

"They see helicopter today and even touch it. They are delighted and feel unbelievable," Gyalre Yeshe said.

Growing up in a poor family of more than ten, Gyalre Yeshe said the training program and anti-poverty efforts have changed her life. In the past, her brother was the only one supporting the family, but now she can pay tuition fees for her siblings which gives her a sense of accomplishment.

The female pilot hopes to contribute more to the society so as to help more like her fulfill their dreams.
