Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday urged Germany and the European Union (EU) to make joint efforts with China to protect and promote the healthy and stable development of their cooperation, so as to bring more certainty and stability to the volatile world.
In a phone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Xi stressed that he and Merkel had communicated for several times last year, which has played an important leading role in the development of China-Germany and China-EU relations.
Enhancing China-Germany and China-EU cooperation could produce major results with significance, he said.
Xi pointed out that the cooperation between China and Germany has overcome the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and achieved stable development, noting that China has remained Germany's largest trading partner for five consecutive years.
He expressed the hope that the two sides will jointly advance cooperation in all areas on the basis of mutual respect and mutual benefit, which is conducive to promoting China-Europe cooperation and adding confidence to the global economic recovery.
China is actively fostering a new development pattern as it continues opening to the outside world while relying on its own strength for development. China is willing to share the opportunities brought by its new round of opening up and development with companies from all over the world, including those from Germany, Xi noted, expressing the hope that Germany will remain open and create more convenience for companies of the two countries to expand mutually beneficial cooperation.
The two countries should take the opportunity of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of China-Germany diplomatic ties and the Winter Olympics in Beijing next year to push forward exchanges in such areas as science and technology, education, culture and sports.
He stressed that China-Europe relations are faced with new development opportunities and various challenges, noting that it is the key that both sides stick to the general direction and keynote of China-EU relations from a strategic perspective, respect each other and remove distractions.
China's development is an opportunity for the EU, Xi said, urging the EU to make correct judgment independently and truly achieve strategic autonomy.
China is willing to work with the EU to ensure the success of a series of important political agendas for the next stage through consultation, deepen and expand practical cooperation in all areas, strengthen cooperation in global governance issues such as climate change, and jointly practice multilateralism, said Xi.
Xi pointed out that vaccines are used to prevent diseases and save lives, saying that China opposes the politicization of vaccines or "vaccine nationalism".
China is willing to work with the international community including Germany to promote fair and reasonable distribution of vaccines, support and assist developing countries in securing vaccines, so as to make contributions to the humanity's victory over the pandemic.
Merkel said that many problems and challenges facing the world today require Germany-China cooperation and EU-China cooperation, adding that strengthened EU-China dialogue and collaboration is not only in both sides' interests, but also benefits the world, and that Germany is willing to make efforts to that end.
Germany attaches importance to China's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) and looks forward to the important opportunities the Plan will bring forth for Germany-China cooperation and EU-China cooperation, Merkel said.
She said that Germany is willing to work with China to prepare for the next round of negotiations between the two governments, resume personnel exchanges at an early date, and bolster exchanges and cooperation in such areas as epidemic prevention, climate change and biodiversity.
Merkel also said her country hopes to maintain cooperation with China over issues such as fair and reasonable distribution of vaccines and mutual vaccination verification.
Germany is willing to contribute to the success of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) to be held in the Chinese city of Kunming this year, said the chancellor.
