Storyline

Wuhan, the Chinese city hit the hardest by the COVID-19 outbreak at the beginning of 2020, now has seen great changes and restored its prosperity and vitality over the past year since lifting the COVID-19 lockdown on April 8, 2020.

On Jan. 23 last year, authorities in Wuhan, the capital city of central China's Hubei Province, launched a state of emergency, and suspended all means of transport going in and out of the city at the peak of the Chinese Lunar New Year travel rush to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus and decrease risks of infection, putting this city with 11 million people on a lockdown.

Local transportation, including buses, subways and taxis were also halted. All residents were asked not to leave the city.

As the COVID-19 threat receded, the city gradually lifted its quarantine measures and is slowly returning to being the vibrant metropolis that it used to be. Migrant workers returned to work, while factories and businesses gradually resumed operations.

On April 8, 2020, Wuhan officially lifted its outbound travel restrictions after the 76-day lockdown, nearly three months' cut-off from the rest of the world.

Since then, life has largely returned to normal, with some preventive measures, including wearing masks, getting temperature checked and keeping social distance, still in place.

Residents say they are gradually getting back on their feet again.

Thursday marks the one-year anniversary of Wuhan's lifting of the COVID-19 lockdown, and the city is regaining its prosperity and vitality with busy traffic flowing on roads, and residents enjoying their normal life.
