China welcomes people from around the world to visit the central Chinese city of Wuhan, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Thursday.

Zhao made the statement at a press conference in Beijing when asked to comment on the special date of April 8, 2020 when the 76-day COVID-19 lockdown of Wuhan was lifted.

"Today marks the first anniversary of the lifting of the city-wide COVID-19 lockdown of Wuhan in Hubei Province. The heroic people of Hubei including Wuhan have sacrificed a lot for the whole country and made great contributions to the global fight against the [COVID-19] epidemic. By taking practical actions, the people of Wuhan have demonstrated the strength and the spirit of China, while demonstrating the patriotism of the Chinese nation of standing together and supporting each other," Zhao said.

Zhao said that since the lockdown was lifted, Wuhan has shown its resilience in economic growth with vitalities filling every corner of the city. By the end of 2020, Zhao said, Wuhan had returned to the ranking of top 10 Chinese cities in terms of the annual economic aggregate.

He then pointed out that the lifting of the lockdown and the subsequent economic recovery in Wuhan have contributed to injecting strong confidence and strength into the world in the fight against the coronavirus.

"After the outbreak of the epidemic [last year], the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in bringing its advantages into play, sent a working group to Wuhan and did all it could to coordinate the supply of anti-epidemic material resources in aid to Hubei, coordinate the receipt of international aid supplies, and coordinate the work of foreign-related services including making arrangements for chartering aircraft, in fighting side by side with the heroic Hubei people, making its due contribution in winning the anti-epidemic battle to defend Hubei including Wuhan. At present, the economic and pubic order in Hubei has returned to normal. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in further bringing into play its advantages, will continue to provide Hubei with assistance in development in the post-epidemic era," Zhao said.

The Foreign Ministry announced Wednesday that it will hold a global promotional event on April 12 in Beijing to showcase Hubei Province and its capital city of Wuhan in building a new bridge for international exchanges and cooperation between other countries and the province, according to Zhao.

"On the occasion of the first anniversary of the lifting of the lockdown of Wuhan, let's wish Wuhan and the rest of Hubei a better and better future. And we welcome everyone to check in Wuhan, to have a taste of the traditional characteristic food of hot noodles with sesame paste, and to visit the Yellow Crane Tower [a must-visit landmark of Wuhan]," Zhao said.
