Storyline

Exhibition gardens from other countries and global organizations at the International Horticultural Exposition in east China's Jiangsu Province have been showcasing unique foreign cultures and garden designs.

The expo opened to the public at the Zaolinwan Tourist Resort in Yangzhou City on Thursday, and focuses on the theme of "Green City, Healthy Life" while featuring 64 outdoor exhibition gardens, including 25 from foreign countries and international organizations.

The Republic of Djibouti’s exhibition garden showcases ancient patterns, desert plants, and rubber decorations to highlight the wonders of the ancient African country.

Japan's Fukuoka exhibition garden spotlights karesansui, known as the Japanese rock garden style which uses raked lines of gravel or sand to represent ripples of water while stones represent mountains.

The nearby Chios Greece garden uses ancient architectural techniques on the arched door of its entrance.

"The arched door uses a small technique. When you speak at the center of the door, the voice is amplified, just like loudspeakers with surround sound effect in modern days," said Zhou Hangjing, Chinese designer of the Greek Chios Garden.

The technique was used at the ancient theater of Epidaurus 2,500 year ago, which allowed over 16,000 audience members in the theater to clearly hear the sound from the center of the stage.

Not far from the Chios Greece garden, the neighboring garden displays ancient Korean culture.

Wooden poles with birds and ducks on top have been set up in the garden. The poles are for praying, as people in the past believed these birds and ducks can "fly" and "bring" people's wishes to the god.

Activities such as dressing up in traditional Korean costumes and making crafts will also be held at the exhibition garden.

The Yangzhou International Horticultural Expo will run until Oct. 8 this year.
