"China has been always abiding by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and China has been really a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development and a defender of international order."

China has taken over the presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of May 2021.
In a note to the press on Monday, Zhang Jun, China's permanent representative to the UN, stressed the necessity of multilateralism and UN's role in it.
"We may also recall that in the declaration on the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, heads of state and government also emphasized that multilateralism is not an option, but a necessity. And the United Nations must be at the center of our efforts. This really represents the common aspiration of the international community and points out the direction for the future work of the Security Council," said Zhang.
China will act responsibly by safeguarding world peace, promoting global development, and preserving the international order, according to Zhang.
"China has been always abiding by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and China has been really a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development and a defender of international order," said Zhang.
The Security Council was established according to the UN Charter. Its primary responsibility is to maintain international peace and security.
The Council has 15 members: the five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.
The Security Council's presidency rotates every month among its 15 members.
China's last presidency was in March 2020.
