Storyline

Indian capital New Delhi, one of the most COVID-19 affected places in the country, is seeing severe shortage of medical resources as the city is seeing more patients die of virus.

The Ambedkar Hospital, a public hospital in New Delhi with 300 beds, is seeing crowds of residents looking for beds to treat COVID-19 patients.

The hospital is also caught in serious inadequacy of oxygen supplies which has posed great challenges to the treatment of those who have been admitted to the hospital.

"But still the oxygen pressure that is being given to the patients, it is not vital [enough] for the patients. They need more oxygen; they need the pressure more. But I really don't know that why they are just lowering down the pressure for the oxygen," said Priyam, relative of a COVID-19 patient at the hospital.

Dr. P K Malik of the Ambedkar Hospital said the hospital is not getting enough guarantee of medical resources.

"Our hospital now has about 300 beds, and more than 200 of them have been used to treat patients. But we are not able to receive more of them with the remaining beds mainly because we are facing an acute shortage of oxygen supplies. The provision of oxygen by our supplier just can't meet our needs," said Dr. Malik.

New Delhi reported 448 new COVID-19-related deaths in the past 24 hours on Tuesday morning - a new record - with the daily new deaths surpassing 400 for three days in a row, which has brought huge pressure on local crematories.

"I saw dozens of bodies keep coming in and there were not enough places or wood for cremating the bodies. I asked workers of the crematory where to cremate the body, and they told me I can just burn it wherever I can make room," said Ashok Kumar, family member of a COVID-19 victim.

The Indian government is making great efforts to effectively allocate resources in battling the novel coronavirus while cracking down on unlawful acts including illegal sales of oxygen cylinders.

India's COVID-19 tally crossed the 20-million mark, reaching 20,282,833 on Tuesday, as 357,229 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours, confirmed the federal health ministry.

Another 3,449 deaths were reported since Monday morning, taking the death toll to 222,408.

There are a total of 3,447,133 active cases in the country, with an increase of 33,491 through Monday, while 16,613,292 people have recovered and been discharged from hospital so far.

The COVID-19 figures continue to peak in the country, but the federal government has ruled out imposing a complete lockdown. Some states have imposed night curfews or partial lockdowns, while the capital New Delhi has been put under a third successive lockdown till May 10.

Meanwhile, 293,310,779 COVID-19 tests had been conducted in India by Monday, out of which 1,663,742 tests were conducted on Monday alone, said the latest data issued by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Tuesday.

So far 17,414 people have died in the national capital due to COVID-19, confirmed Delhi's health department.

The third phase of the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination began on May 1. So far, over 158 million vaccination doses have been administered in India since the country kicked off its inoculation drive in January.
