Storyline

The World Health Organization (WHO) granted emergency use authorization to China's Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine on Friday, making it the sixth vaccine to receive WHO validation for safety, efficacy, and quality.

WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the approval is expected to expand the list of COVID-19 vaccines that COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) can buy and give countries confidence to expedite their own regulatory approval, as well as to import and administer the vaccine.

The WHO also issued a temporary recommendation for the use of Sinopharm vaccines on the same day, supporting the promotion of the vaccine on a global scale.

The WHO pointed out that the Sinopharm vaccine is an inactivated vaccine, which is suitable for resource-poor environments due to its easy storage. The Sinopharm vaccine is also the first vaccine with a monitor on its bottle. The small label on the vaccine bottle changes color with temperature, so that health workers can know if the vaccine is safe to use.

Senior advisor to the WHO director-general Bruce Aylward said at the press conference that the WHO has discussed its potential production capacity with Sinopharm Group, showing interest in its ability to help the world respond to the pandemic.

He said Sinopharm Group has been working tirelessly to provide a large number of vaccines to countries around the globe in the past few months, while also providing vaccines to the Chinese people.

The WHO Emergency Use Listing is used to assess the suitability of new health products in public health emergencies, aiming to provide medicines, vaccines, and diagnostics as soon as possible to respond to emergencies, while strictly complying with safety, efficacy, and quality standards.

Once a vaccine is included in the list, the WHO will work with regional monitoring networks and partners to notify countries' national health authorities of the vaccine and its expected performance.

The pre-certification of the WHO is an evaluation and certification procedure to ensure the quality, safety, and efficacy of vaccines to meet international standards. It's also considered a "passport" to the vaccine procurement of the United Nations.

China has always been committed to building a global community of health for all and assisting in the global battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.

By promising to make COVID-19 vaccines a global public good and joining the WHO-led COVAX initiative, China has been helping developing countries and promoting the fair distribution of vaccines around the world.

Chinese companies have already carried out joint vaccine production in Belt and Road partner countries including Indonesia, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Malaysia, Pakistan, and Turkey.

Altogether two Chinese vaccines were presented for the WHO assessment. Apart from the one from Sinopharm, the other one produced by Sinovac Biotech is in the last stage of evaluation for WHO Emergency Use Listing.
