The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday certified the safety, efficacy and manufacturing practices of China's Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine following a comprehensive assessment of data and the completion of on-site inspections.
At a press briefing held by the WHO, its Assistant-Director General for Access to Health Products Dr. Mariangela Simao said that the clinical data of Sinopharm vaccine has been evaluated, which has proven that the vaccine is safe and effective.
"The Sinopharm has received an emergency use listing by WHO on Friday after an extensive review by an external technical advisory group that looked at different data. We did site inspections in China in January and February," said Simao adding that Sinopharm is "compliant" in good manufacturing practices.
"We also accessed the clinical data that's available for Sinopharm. And it was also considered suitable in efficacy and safety and good manufacturing practices," she said.
She also noted that Sinopharm vaccine "has been very much used globally", and "has been considered both safe and efficacious".
WHO granted emergency use authorization to China's Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine on Friday, making it the sixth vaccine to receive WHO validation for safety, efficacy, and quality.
