The municipal government of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil released an action plan outlining its goals for achieving sustainable development and tackling climate change at the Museum of Tomorrow on Saturday, World Environment Day.
The plan's medium-term goals for the next 10 years include: investment of 350 million real (about 69 million U.S. dollars) for local sustainable development projects per year; reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20 percent in 2030 compared to 2017; conversion 40 percent of the city's jobs to eco-friendly positions; cut of public lighting electricity consumption by 50 percent through energy-efficient technologies; and improvement of the housing shortage situation and renovation by half the city's dangerous houses.
Its long-term goal for 2050 specifies that Rio de Janeiro will cease greenhouse gas emissions and all public buses will be converted to electric vehicles.
