Storyline

Brazilian health authorities kicked off a mass inoculation program on the island of Paqueta on Sunday to test vaccine efficacy in different stages and the forming of large-scale immunization just as the country recorded more than half a million COVID-19 deaths.

Brazil surpassed half a million COVID-19 deaths after registering 2,301 more deaths from the fatal disease in the past 24 hours, the health ministry said Saturday.

With the spiking cases, Brazil is hoping to ward off infections with mass inoculations. On the day, health authorities began vaccinating residents over the age of 18 on Paqueta Island off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, where the lcoal population is a little more than 4,100 people.

The vaccination drive, scheduled to be completed in eight weeks, is designed to track the blood samples of the people involved to see if the vaccines are safe and if one dose alone could effectively curb the transmission.

Health authorities also hope that the test can tell them whether large-scale immunization can reach non-immunized populations such as adolescents and children.

Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes said if the plan goes well and the islanders can form an immune barrier, the city, even the country, might follow in its step.

The Brazilian ministry said Saturday that the country has recorded a total caseload of over 17,883,750, the world's third largest following the United States and India.

More than 86 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered nationwide, and over 24.1 million people have received two jabs, it added.
