Seventeen airport workers in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, were tested positive for COVID-19, and nine of them had been diagnosed as confirmed cases, according to the municipal government on Wednesday.

Hu Wanjin, vice mayor of Nanjing, told a press conference that the 17 people tested positive for the virus were working as cleaners at the Nanjing Lukou International Airport.

"A total of 17 people tested positive for COVID-19. At present, nine of them have been diagnosed as confirmed cases, of which four are mild cases and five are general type. Five people of them have been confirmed as asymptomatic carriers. The remaining three who were tested positive for COVID-19 are awaiting further diagnosis. As of 05:00 [Wednesday], July 21, 157 close contacts of people tested positive have been traced. There were 56 secondary close contacts. Further screening is still underway," said Hu.

Three communities in Jiangning District and one village in Lishui District have been classified as medium-risk areas for COVID-19.

The Lukou subdistrict where the airport is located has been sealed off and began widespread nucleic acid testing on Tuesday night for its 140,000 residents.

"For the nine people tested positive [for the virus], we immediately send them to Nanjing Public Medical Center for further diagnosis and treatment. Meanwhile, their close contacts also have been transferred to quarantine centers by a closed-loop transportation process," said Li Minjian, deputy director of the Health Commission of Jiangning District.

As of 11:00 Wednesday, over 100,000 nucleic acid tests have been conducted in Lukou subdistrict, Jiangning District.
