Heavy rains that have deluged central China's Henan Province for almost a week had killed 33 people, with eight still missing as of early Thursday morning, local authorities said.
A total of 376,000 local residents have been relocated to safe places, said the provincial emergency management department.
The deadly floods caused by heavy rains have damaged more than 215,200 hectares of crops, causing direct economic losses of about 1.22 billion yuan (about 189 million U.S. dollars) so far.
The provincial capital Zhengzhou saw 617.1 mm of rainfall over a three-day period starting on Saturday night, almost the equivalent of the city's average annual precipitation.
The Henan Provincial Meteorological Observatory activated the highest level of rainstorm alert at 11:00 Thursday, as rainfall is expected to continue for the next three hours in a number of cities including Anyang, Hebi, Xinxiang and Jiaozuo. The local accumulated precipitation is likely to exceed 100 mm, according to forecasts.
