Storyline

Flood relief efforts and reconstruction are underway across towns and villages in West Germany after incessant torrential rain triggered severe flooding, which resulted in fatalities and widespread damages.

The death toll from the floods that swept across Western Europe continues to climb. Belgium raised the total number of deaths to 37, as more than 200 people have died in Belgium and Germany.

Local businesses are also reeling from the extensive damages caused by the floods, with total losses from the floods worth millions.

Klaus Hauser's bakery sat right in the path of what locals describe as an "inland tsunami", and all he could do amid the flood was to run to higher ground and watch his shops being washed away.

"The loss will be in the millions. I don't even know if I am going to try to rebuild. I have five shops and they are not here anymore. They don't exist anymore," said Hauser.

While salvage crews are working to clear away the rubble, the terrifying memories of the night when the rain came will linger for the time to come.

"I was at home. And then all of the blue lights started flashing. I didn't know where my father was. He spent the night on the roof of a submerged car until he was rescued in the morning. So I didn't sleep," said Susanna Ackermann, an Ahrweiler resident.

With the blazing summer sun, the clean-up work has become hot, sticky and labor intensive.

Residents in the region have set up roadside rest stops with water, food and places for taking showers for people in need. The townsfolk said that they feel it is their duty to help those less fortunate than themselves

"We have created some places where people can shower, eat and sleep. People from all over Germany are driving through here. It's great. It's incredible. They are all trying their best to help," said Miriam Krieger, Waldorf resident.

That solidarity will be needed to help Germany get through this natural disaster.

Politicians in the capital Berlin also promised to fund flood victims to help them recover from the calamity.
